Giacomini:Jets ‘pretty close' to playoff team

Signed by the New York Jets on Thursday, offensive lineman Breno Giocomini shared his thoughts on joining Gang Green and the team's bitter rivalry with the New England Patriots.

When New York Jets right tackle Austin Howard joined the Oakland Raiders on a five-year $30 million deal during free agency, Gang Green had a gaping hole to fill along the right side of its offensive line. General manager John Idzik acted swiftly and signed former Seattle Seahawks right tackle Breno Giacomini. In only his few days with the Green and White, the veteran lineman thinks the best days are yet to come for Rex Ryan and company.

"The main goal I think would be to win the division first and get a playoff win at home," said Giacomini of the expectations this upcoming season. "I think they're pretty close. They're starting to load up a little bit here. The defense is pretty good, so if you can play some defense and run the ball, you can get to the playoffs."

If the Jets have any hope of winning the division they'll need to unseat the New England Patriots, who have won the AFC East 10 of the past 11 seasons. Giacomini isn't a stranger to heated rivalries, but he's also not in the business of letting his emotions get the best of him.

"I played them once and I've been around a little bit in the league," noted Giocomini of his familiarity with the team from Foxborough. "Maybe after the game, after we win, it will be a lot better to tell my friends and family to kick some rocks or something, you know what I mean? It will definitely be fun after we win that game."

When asked by reporters whether he grew up rooting for the Jets archrivals, Giacomini was candid, but admitted he'll gain satisfaction if Gang Green comes out on top.

"Yeah, I was," said the Jets offensive lineman of rooting for the Patriots when he was young. "I liked Drew Bledsoe a lot growing up."

"I'll just tell my friends and family, they're all Patriots fans, to go kick some rocks after we win."
