Santonio Holmes 'getting close' to practicing

The New York Jets top wideout Santonio Holmes could be close to suiting up again for the Green and White again in 2013.

Most Jets fans are awaiting Santonio Holmes' return to the football field, which might be earlier than expected. The wide receiver was seen catching passes from Geno Smith, which has raised questions of when he will return to the gridiron.

Holmes is off and running for the first time during training camp. He looked sharp during his practice session, which he was apparently going about 75 percent on Saturday night before the Jets second preseason game. Holmes is still recovering from the LisFranc injury he suffered at the beginning of the 2012 season.

The murky timetable of Holmes' return is due to the injury itself. The severity of a LisFranc can vary from player to player so the Jets have allowed Holmes to come back when his foot is fully healthy.

In the meantime, the Jets will be reliant upon other wide receivers, especially Stephen Hill. The second year wide receiver is attempting to make a larger impact in his sophomore season. He also hopes to see his veteran counterpart on the field soon.

"Tone is very anxious," Hill said in an interview with the New York Daily News. "He's definitely ready to come back. You can tell."

"Everything I hear from him, everything he talks to me about is, ‘Hey, I want to get back on the field.' That's all he wants."

The talk of Holmes heated up when general manager John Idzik said on New York's WFAN radio that the wideout is "getting close" to practicing. Holmes has even loftier expectations for himself.

"He definitely wants to get back as soon as possible," Hill said. "If he could have played on Saturday, he would have played. He kept saying, ‘I can play. I can play.' But we're just like, ‘Look, Tone…' "

Getting him back as soon as possible would be a huge boom for the Jets' offense. Until then, it will be baby steps to see how quickly Holmes will recover.
