Quarterback:
Brett Favre had a very tough assignment.
When you have been a new offense for a month, and you are facing the most complex defense in the league, that is a
daunting challenge.
So Favre's inconsistency in this game shouldn't come as surprise.
And you could tell early on this could be a long game for Favre and the Jets offense. On the first drive, they were
called for having too many men in the huddle, also had to burn a timeout because of a formation issue and Favre
threw a near pick to Tedy Bruschi.
But even with these issues, the resourceful Favre still managed to lead the Jets into field goal range. He had two
impressive passes on this drive, a 20-yarder to Cotchery and a key 13-yard pass to Leon Washington on third-and-
four.
Not much happening the rest of the first half for Favre on the offense, aside from his short pass to Laveranues
Coles that the wideout turned into a 54-yard gain and a Jay Feely field goal.
The first drive of the second half was problematic for Favre. He was called for an illegal forward pass for
stepping over the line on a throw. And the drive ended with Favre telegraphing a pass that was picked off by
Brandon Meriweather.
Favre engineered an impressive touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, taking the team 71 yards on 11 plays. His
most impressive pass on this drive was a crossing route to Dustin Keller that went for 19 yards. The drive
culiminated with a two-yard touchdown toss to a wide open Chansi Stuckey.
The Jets got the ball back one more time, and they went three-and-out.
Wide receiver:
Kind of a quiet outing for the wideouts.
On a positive note, Chansi Stuckey looks like he has the potential to be special. He had a 28-yard reception in the
third quarter, and a touchdown catch in the fourth.
Laveranues Coles is still working out the kinks out with Favre. A Coles drop ended the second drive. Early in the
second, Coles made a great catch on a short throw and took it 54 yards. But then Coles had a drop in the middle of
the third on an out route.
Jerricho Cothcery was held to one catch, and was called for offensive interference in the third quarter when he
made contact with Deltha O'Neal on a deep reception.
Tight end:
The tight ends had a non-descript performance, but they did have their moments.
Chris Baker did some good run blocking. On the Jets first drive, he actually knocked two guys out of the way,
including Richard Seymour, on a Thomas Jones 16-yard run off left tackle. Baker had another nice block on another
Jones gain of 16 early in the fourth quarter.
Dustin Keller beat Adalius Thomas on a crossing route that went for 19 yards early in the fourth.
Running back:
While much of the focus will be on the three failed running attempts after the Jets had first and goal from the
three, Thomas Jones didn't have a bad game, finishing with 70 yards on 17 carries. It probably wasn't great play-
calling dialing up three runs in a row against a Pats front that is very hard to run against.
Leon Washington did some good things. On the Jets first possession, he broke a tackle attempt on Deltha O'Neal on a
catch-and-run for seven yards. In the second quarter, he broke a tackle attempt by Rodney Harrison in the backfield
on an 11-yard run that took the ball to the three yard line.
Offensive line:
The Jets offensive line was inconsistent.
Obviously they didn't get enough of a push on the three rushing attempts that failed near the goalline in the
second quarter. On third down, Richard Seymour got by D'Brickashaw Ferguson to stop Thomas Jones for a loss of two,
forcing a field goal attempt.
Alan Faneca pancaked Tedy Bruchsi on a Thomas Jones run up the middle for six yards on the first drive. Richard
Seymour got by Faneca to sack Brett Favre late in the first half.
Nick Mangold and Brandon Moore created a big hole for a Jones gain of eight up the middle early in the fourth. The
Jets scored on the next play.
Damien Woody was called for holding Ty Warren bringing back a long run in the third quarter.
But the Jets had several nice running plays, and did hold the Pats to just two sacks, so this can't be called a bad
performance by the guys up front.
