Dan's random thoughts from the Cleveland game

Jets WR David Clowney

Here are some of Dan Leberfeld's thoughts on the Jets first preseason game at Cleveland Stadium -

Justin Miller got a good initial test for his surgical knee when he got crushed by Browns tight end Darnell Dickens on the opening kickoff . . .

Kellen Clemens field vision has been shaky during training camp, but he did a very nice job on the first drive going through his progressions, and hitting one of his secondary reads - Chris Baker . . .

Clemens did a poor job on his fourth-and-one QB keeper - not being aware of where the hole was. He got stopped on the line, and the Jets turned the ball over on downs . . .

It was the first preseason game so there is no cause for alarm, but the new-and-improved run blocking opened no holes for Thomas Jones on his first three carries. All three runs were basically stopped around the line . . .

Brad Kassell, filling in for David Harris (hamstring) at inside linebacker, did a poor job shedding an offensive lineman on Jamal Lewis' first carry that went for 11 yards. Kassell later left the game with a leg injury . . .

Mike DeVito, starting for Shaun Ellis (right hand) at defensive end, stopped Lewis for a loss of one on the first drive . . .

On the first drive, OLB Calvin Pace already paid dividends with a QB pressure that led to an incomplete pass to Lewis . . .

CB Darrelle Revis had a shaky game, giving up a TD to WR Braylon Edwards and a slant to WR Travis Wilson, where he gave the receiver too much cushion . . .

WR David Clowney was very impressive with two long touchdown passes from QB Brett Ratliff. But while Clowney deserves a great deal of credit, it certainly helped on both plays that he was matched up with a slow S Nick Sorensen. Good job by Ratliff and the coaches recognizing this mismatch . . .

WR Chansi Stuckey had an impressive catch on a crossing route from Ratliff, snatching a high pass out of the air. By the way, perhaps the Jets coaches should think twice before using Stuckey as a kickoff return. First off, he looked tentative on his only return. Secondly, with his history of foot problems, why risk it?

Thirdly, he's a better punt returner than kick returner. And lastly, Ahmad Carroll looks like he could be a special kick returner. He flashed tremendous speed on his two returns . . .

LB David Bowens had a really good game. He made a bunch of impressive players . . .

LB Kenwin Cummings looks like a very a solid blitzer. He did a very good job avoiding a running back on a first half sack . . .

This Dwight Lowery is something else. All he does is make plays. He had a pick in the end zone to ice the game, and a punt return for a touchdown.

Along with that, he added a few PD's. The pass interference call on him was a ticky-tack call . . .

CB Drew Coleman continues to improve. He had two key PD's in the end zone late in the game . . . Backup safety Cameron Worrell suffered some kind of leg injury in the game. He had a long black sleeve covering his entire right leg after the game.
