Mawae named Union President

Former Jets center Kevin Mawae was named the new President of the NFLPA. He replaces Troy Vincent, who is taking another position in the organization. Mawae's union activity might have contributed to his release from the Jets a couple of years ago.

This can't be confirmed, but there was a lot of speculation that Eric Mangini didn't want a clubhouse lawyer like Mawae hurting his ability to install his program. So one of the first moves he made was to release the center, who quickly signed with Tennessee.

"The players are well informed of the potential cancellation of the CBA by the owners," said Mawae. "They are committed to doing what it takes to preserve our game."
