Where is Fireman Ed?

Posted Nov 16, 2007

Jets coach Eric Mangini was asked today about the status of Fireman Ed, who has been sidelined with a knee injury.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to (trainer) John (Mellody yet)," said Mangini. "Usually we meet after [the press conference)."

Is Ed getting treated by Mellody?

"No, we are just assessing the situation in a lot of different areas. We wish him a speedy recovery."

Is it possible Ed could put on IR, ending his season?

"It's a tough call," said Mangini. "You're going to have to go through and really see how many games he can get back for. With all the things he's done, you may give him a little bit more benefit of the doubt - not easy to replace. He's really played a significant role. You have to look at it as, okay, who's going to replace him on the 53 or the 78,000. You've got to figure that out."

Is Mangini a little upset at GM Mike Tannenbaum for the lack of depth at that position?

"It's hard," said Mangini. "You've got to assess the whole league and look at other guys. How many Fireman Ed's are there?"

Not many.
