Jags safety Darius out for the year

Posted Sep 20, 2005

The Jets next opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars, lost one of their best defensive players for the season.

Strong safety Donovan Darius tore the ACL in his left knee, and is out for the year. He hurt the knee on a punt return in the second quarter of the Jaguars loss to Indianapolis last Sunday. He will be replaced by Deke Cooper.

"Deke will have a chance to step up and be a starter in this league," said Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith. "We feel he has starter capability and always has. We don't anticipate a big drop-off.

“When you compare the two, Donovin is probably stronger against the run but Deke is an all-around safety who can play the run and the pass."
