Rapid Reaction: Jets 13 Colts 10 Final

Find out the Jets' postgame reaction to Thursday Night's preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts at MetLife Stadium.

Michael Vick

On the touchdown drive…

It was great. To have a 14-play drive, it only builds your confidence. Hopefully we can continue to build and move forward. (We’ll) try to do some great things next week and do it even better, do it at a faster pace and just try to create avenues to keep the chains moving. That’s what this game is all about and that’s what we want to continue to do.

On the reception he received from the fans…

It was great. Great to get a good reception from the crowd. It only gets you going, gets your blood flowing, (and) gets the adrenaline flowing. It doesn’t alleviate the butterflies, but even still at my age you still have the anxiety, which is a good thing. It helps you play even better. It brings out the best in me.

On being used in certain offensive packages throughout the course of a game…

It’s cool, but that disrupts the timing of the offense. I think it has to be done at the right time. I experienced that in Philadelphia with Donovan (McNabb) at times. You want to go out there and let the quarterback get into a rhythm and not try to do too much. I think that’s doing too much. When the time calls for it, then I think the coaches will see fit that that’s put in.

On Geno Smith’s performance…

I think Geno did well. He did good enough for coach to pull him out after two good series. Moved the ball down field, got a field goal, got three points and anytime you score some points, it’s always a good thing. I think when we go back and watch the film, all the mistakes he made are correctable and I think, at the end of the day, Geno did a good job.

On if the game has slowed down in the preseason following training camp…

Yeah, it felt good. I was going through my reads pretty smoothly. (On) a couple of those plays, they got some guys that were free on me and I had to get the ball away. But other than that, the game felt good. It felt smooth. I was able to go through my reads and hit some open guys. With time, we’ll get better and just continue to progress and continue to work hard.

On keeping the field goal drive alive and being decisive…

Yeah, well, (I) would always like to get the protection set and get it set up to where I don’t have to rush or be hurried, but the guy did a good job at holding his water and he brought the blitz late. I saw it, so in hindsight we were in field goal range, (so) you just want to keep points on the board (and) don’t want to put ourselves out of field goal range. In the future, just get better at picking it up, doing some things at the line, maybe a dummy count or something, to get the guy to show it a little earlier and then get the protection set so that we can run the play and get everything situated.

On the performance of Jets QB Geno Smith…

I thought Geno played extremely well. He had a few throw-aways. I thought he did a great job stepping up in the pocket a few times and protecting the ball. I was really pleased with (both) Geno and Mike.

On Jets CB Dimitri Patterson

They knew both of our corners were hanging out to dry. They were taking some one-on-one shots out there. Dimitri’s a veteran player and he’ll respond. You mix a trap or two in over there and we’ll see what happens. He made a nice play on the first play of the game. Every guy gives up completions. The thing I liked was that he finished and made a tackle on one of those deep ones. He might not have had his best day, but it certainly wasn’t on him. I put him out to dry a little bit.

On the play of Jets WR Eric Decker and RB Chris Johnson

You see why we’re so high on them. Decker presents that big target, but the thing I like most about him is that he’s a team guy. He’s competitive. He blocks. He’s starting to dig out those safeties. I was really happy with him. Obviously, we didn’t bring him in here to be a blocker; we’d put a full cage on him if we did. That’s just the kind of guy he is. I’m proud he’s on this football team. As far as Chris Johnson, I’m glad we don’t have to defend him. He still has great speed. He made a few plays and got hit a couple of times, but he popped up and had a big smile on his face, so he’s ready to roll.

On the scrambling ability of Jets QB Michael Vick…

He looked great. He looked great. When you have them all covered up, you better account for the quarterback. When a quarterback can run for first downs…we saw Geno do it a few times along with Mike. It puts a huge, huge stress on the defense.

Nick Mangold

On the difference in Geno Smith from last year…

He’s been fantastic. He knows the plays inside and out, where before it was, he knew the play, but he didn’t really, it seemed like there was a little bit of hesitation. Now he’s got the confidence, he’s out there, he’s making the calls. We have good communication, we’re able (to say) “Hey, let’s do it this way, let’s do it this way.” It’s been good to see him grow like that.
