Vick offers playful challenge to the media

Michael Vick | New York Jets

With the New York Jets attempting to limit mistakes and turnovers, Michael Vick and his teammates have been paying the price for miscues by doing push-ups after practice. The veteran quarterback had some fun with reporters in Cortland this week by issuing them a push-up challenge of his own.

Another day of training camp, and Michael Vick had issued a playful challenge to the media. It had nothing to do with the quarterback controversy that continues to bubble beneath the surface on back pages and websites. Vick and the offense had been struggling with minor mistakes this summer, and he was getting desperate.

“You coach off of it right now, you correct it,” Vick said of the offense’s performance so far. “You penalize the guys however you want to do it. We’ve done a ton of push-ups, I’m sure everyone is tired of doing them. You guys will be doing them too, if you keep coming to practice.”

Vick will never be just another backup quarterback, but that hasn’t stopped him from trying. Despite the thousands of words that have been spilled on the competition between himself and last year’s draft pick Geno Smith, Vick has said all the right things — that he isn’t worried about it, that he’s just worried on the improvements he knows he has to make between now and September.

“There are a lot of different things they are doing in the run game that I didn’t understand and didn’t do in years prior,” Vick said. “Just having a chance to kind of buckle down that over the summer, and doing it out here now has helped me understand what the run game has entailed. Just having the opportunity to do that and still picking up and progressing in the passing game is always going to be a challenge.”

The Jets offense has reportedly struggled a bit this summer, regardless of who’s under center — not necessarily surprising, considering they’re going against one of the best defensive units in the league. (“They came after us a little bit,” Vick said after Tuesday’s practice.) For now, Vick isn’t too worried about it, but the time to get those things corrected is running out.

“It’s getting closer to game time,” Vick said after a somewhat sloppy day of training camp. “We have to start focusing on correcting the little things, not missing protections, not jumping offside, get some more big plays down the field.”
