While head injuries have become a hot button issue in football, ankle injuries are widspread in the game of basketball. Ektio's sales and marketing executive Jon Katz explains how his company's footwear can help solve this customer pain point.

Green and White Report’s Rick Laughland sat down with Ektio’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing Jon Katz to talk about how his company is reshaping the way consumers think about athletic footwear and ankle injury prevention.

Rick Laughland | Green and White Report:

Q: As an avid basketball player and victim of countless ankle sprains, I’m dying to know, how do Ektio basketball shoes actually prevent ankle injuries?

Jon Katz | Ektio:

A: It starts from inside the shoe where the duel straps act as an internal ankle brace. What actually prevents the injury is the fact that the shoe is now attached to the foot. When you land on someone’s foot, there is movement that goes on and your foot and the shoe move in opposite directions. When they go in different directions, it stretches the ligaments and causes a sprain. Our shoe brings your foot and the shoe together and minimizes the movement that goes on inside, therefore minimizing the chance of separation and stretching of the ligament. 1 strap is designed to lock you into the back of the shoe, and the other wraps around the ankle and supports the ligaments. Next, we have the side bumpers that act as extra stability and leverage so the shoe doesn't roll over. If you're shoe is about to roll, the bumpers will come into play and stop it from rolling.

Rick Laugland:

Q: Who invented the ankle support technology?

Jon Katz:

A: Barry Katz, and Orthopaedic Radiologist and former college basketball player, as well as Thomas Nordstrom and Steve Dribbon, Orthopaedic surgeon and podiatrist, respectively.

Rick Laugland:

Q: Are there any notable NBA or College players using the product?

Jon Katz:

A: John Starks and Rick Barry, both former NBA players, currently endorse the product. NBA players for the most part are more interested in making the most money from other shoe companies. We have the shoe on some college players, but no major notable players. Division 1 and even Division II schools all have contracts with big companies, so that's even harder to break into.

Rick Laugland:

Q: Where can fans/customers buy Ektio Shoes?

Jon Katz:

A: We're available at Ektio.com, Eastbay.com, Amazon.com, and in about 2 weeks,Finishline.com.

Rick Laugland:

Q: Any other health benefits from wearing Ektio Shoes?

Jon Katz:

A: Besides the ankle stability, not anything major, but it's something that will allow older guys to play basketball longer which can help them stay healthier as they get into their 40s and 50s.

Rick Laugland:

Q: How did John Starks become involved with Ektio?

Jon Katz:

A: We met with him in 2009 and showed him the proto-type and he put the shoe on, and loved it. He immediately wanted to become part of the company and help us protect players around the world while playing basketball. It's the most common injury in the sport, and he loves basketball, so his passion for the game led him to want to help make a difference.

Rick Laugland:

Q: What other apparel or gear is available through Ektio?

Jon Katz:

A: We focus on our sneakers right now. There are T-shirts available on our website, but no other athletic gear or apparel. Our core is our athletic shoes that help keep players in the game and to provide shoes that give players more confidence to go hard and with no fear.
