With the 2012 NFL regular season already in the rear view mirror, that didn't stop two of the league's elite cornerbacks from trading blows on Twitter.

No one is questioning Darrelle Revis’ ranking as the NFL’s premier cornerback, except of course Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman. Famed for his outspoken nature and boisterous interactions with the media, Sherman isn’t pulling any punches as he challenges Revis for top cornerback status.

“Got off my flight to this hilarious convo,” said Sherman of his interaction with Revis. "So I have 8 picks 3 ff and a sack. My season stats looking like Revis career stats.”

The war of words between the league’s elite defensive playmakers started to heat up as Revis fired back with a vengeance.

"I've never seen a man before run his mouth so much like a girl," the Jets’ No. 24 replied. "This dude just steady putting my name in his mouth to get notoriety. Sit down young pup and wait your turn."

Revis took a poke at Sherman’s Twitter following, hinting that his business manager has more followers than Sherman.

The trash talk didn’t stop there. Sherman sent another shot in No. 24’s direction, claiming that he was going to surpass Revis’ stardom.

"Don't need ya name ... Ur name will be irrelevant once u step back on the field bruh, Sherman tweeted. "Get ya picks up!"

The cornerback rivalry spawned when Sherman tweeted a picture of his career stats compared to Revis’ with a caption that read "Women lie, men lie, numbers don't lie."

Sherman added fuel to the fire when he polled fans in New Orleans during Super Bowl week to determine whether he or Revis was the best cornerback in the NFL.

Clearly not impressed by Sherman’s antics, Revis felt compelled to put Seattle’s defensive standout in his place.

“child please, lol!!!,” exclaimed Revis. "Your still taking baby steps son. Don't get to a head of yourself.”

Training camp is nearly five months away, but both players are in mid-season trash talking form. In 32 career games, Sherman has amassed 12 interceptions and four forced fumbles compared to Revis’ 19 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles in 79 career starts.

While offenses have steered clear of throwing in the Revis’ direction the past few seasons, Sherman isn’t buying into the Revis Island hype.

"Sometimes the truth needs to be told," Sherman tweeted. "Tired of the noise lol. Btw I am near the least targeted corner in the League. So keep the excuses."
