Apparently Rex Ryan's undying loyalty to his hand-picked quarterback and the front office's long-term financial commitment to Mark Sanchez have resulted in the New York Jets keeping their depth chart status quo.
Ryan announced his decision during a team meeting at 8am on Wednesday morning. With the Jets fighting for their playoff lives, the coaching staff came to an agreement that Sanchez gives Gang Green the best opportunity to win. The decision has created an uprising amongst the fan base, who clearly favored the upstart McElroy over a struggling Sanchez.
"I know he's got an opportunity to be our starting quarterback," Ryan told reporters on Wednesday. "I believe that he's going to do a tremendous job for us."
With reports surfacing this week that Jets' owner Woody Johnson preferred McElroy to start for the remainder of the season, Ryan informed the media that the decision was ultimately the head coach's to make.
"I don't get any pressure from Woody," professed Ryan. "I'm fortunate, I have a great relationship with my owner. We have open conversations all the time. We can say things to each other and all that. Where I'm real fortunate is from the day Mr. Johnson hired me, he said it's 100 percent my decision on who plays and what their role is."
While Gang Green's confidence in Sanchez seemed to waiver this past week, Ryan is convinced that the locker room, coaching staff and front office will rally behind No. 6.
"It's a New York Jet decision," admitted Ryan. "Everybody in this organization may have differences in opinion and things like that, but at the end of the day this is a New York Jet decision and we feel good about that."
