Wide Receiver Competition

Posted Jul 23, 2003

The battle for the fourth, and fifth wide receiver spot is starting to heat up at Jets Camp. There are such good candidates for the positions that starting wide receiver Wayne Chrebet says he thinks this year’s group is better than last years

. “Our fourth and fifth receivers, can go out and make plays,” said Chrebet. “I think we have a better receiving core than last year.”

… There are in all likelihood two roster spots available for four qualified candidates. Cecil Moore Albert Johnson, Jon Carter, and Kevin Swayne, keep in mind that Albert Johnson is also the most experienced kick returner of the group. Moore is an undrafted rookie out of East Tennessee State, who had a pretty impressive morning of practice. “Cecil made a couple of nice catches today, he’s a big guy, with good hands,” said Herman Edwards. “He has the ability to make catches in a crowd.”

… Chrebet was also impressed with Moore, saying “Cecil has come a long way since our OTA’S.” Moore is intriguing because he is a big physical receiver. He stands at 6-1, and weighs 210 pounds. He might be the tall, physical target that the Jets are looking for in goal line situations.

… Carter is probably the fastest receiver of the group, but he has had a label on him of sub par hands, and a tendency to not understand whatever offensive system he is playing in. He was claimed of waivers last year on October 9th from the New York Giants, however the former giants draft pick was inactive for the entire year. Carter has the size at 6-0, and the speed to be the deep threat that the jets are looking for in certain situational passing downs. Today Carter hooked up with Vinny Testaverde for a fifty-yard reception.

… One thing is for certain and that is with the number of available receivers the jets have in their West Coast system no receiver is going to put up lights out legitimate number one type numbers. “No receiver ever gets the ball enough, that is just a receivers mentality,” said Edwards. “In our system if a guy makes 60 catches he had a great season.”

… Shawn Ellis looked good in the morning session. Ellis fought through the Jets first team offensive line and knocked down an attempted pass by Chad Pennington. Ellis has had a solid career as a Jet since being picked in the first round in 2000, but has never reached a pro-bowl type level that some fans expect from him.

… “Shawn has been to the playoffs twice, both times as our starting defensive end,” said Edwards. “Personally I think a pro-bowl player is someone who plays all the time, not just someone who gets sacks. Shawn played well for us last season, now he has to continue to improve. Shawn Ellis is flashy, he’s doing a nice job.” The roster spot for the back up safety is one that fans should also keep an eye on. “The key is who is going to be the fourth guy in the mix,” said Edwards. We have a lot of time to evaluate the back up safety position.” John Abraham had an interception off Chad Pennington this morning. “He (Chad) threw against a pro-bowl corner and he made a play,” said Edwards. “He can pick off passes, that is what he can do.”
