Apparently quarterback Mark Sanchez wasn't joking when he told reporters this preseason that the Jets were saving their touchdowns for the regular season. Following a three-game preseason touchdown drought, Gang Green's offense exploded for 48 points on Sunday afternoon against the Buffalo Bills, setting a new franchise-record for points scored in a regular season opener.
The Jets wasted little time in leading a spectacular scoring barrage building a 27-7 halftime lead and coasted to a 48-28 opening day victory.
While Tebow dominated the offseason headlines, it was Sanchez who stole the show on Sunday completing 19 of 27 pass attempts for 266 yards three touchdowns and just one interception.
With 6:02 left in the first-quarter, Sanchez connected with second-year wide receiver Jeremy Kerley for the first touchdown of the year, bringing a sellout crowd to its feet. For an encore performance, Kerley returned Brian Moorman's punt 66-yards for a touchdown with 12:40 remaining in the first half and in doing so became the first player in Jets' history to record a receiving touchdown and punt return touchdown in the same game.
Rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill hauled in two-touchdowns in his debut as the Jets' lit up the scoreboard at Metlife Stadium.
The New York Jets travel to the Steel City to face the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday with kickoff set for 4:25pm.
