Few players were under more scrutiny than Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes. The former team captain asked the media to stop dragging down Gang Green by writing negative reports about the team.

Santonio Holmes has been the media’s punching bag this offseason, and now he’s punching back.

The Jets mercurial wideout is calling out the writers covering Gang Green imploring them to stop focusing on the negative and support the team. This plea comes just six months after Holmes was involved in a spat with offensive lineman Brandon Moore and subsequently benched during New York’s loss in the regular season finale to the Miami Dolphins.

On the heels of back-to-back AFC championship game appearances, Rex Ryan’s bunch dropped their final three regular season games last year and missed the postseason for the first time in his three-year head coaching tenure. Amidst a dysfunctional 2011 campaign, Holmes pointed his finger at the Jets offensive line and attributed the offense’s struggles to their poor performance. Former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was not on the same wavelength with Holmes or quarterback Mark Sanchez, which created a growing divide in the locker room.

With last season merely a distant memory, both the Jets and Holmes are looking to turn the page and rise above the negativity that ultimately derailed their title hopes. The Green-and-White fell well shy of the lofty expectations set forth by Ryan, precipitating a media firestorm. Gang Green’s brash talk and swagger made it an easy target for critics when its season came crashing down to Earth.

Flash forward to this upcoming season and Holmes is trying to convince the media to shed a positive light on the Jets, but his comments may do the exact opposite. New York’s No. 10 is attempting to control something that is out of his hands because the only factor that will silence the critics is winning football games.
