It’s become an offseason ritual of sorts for Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets, but this time around the cast of characters will include backup quarterback Tim Tebow.
With organized team activities and minicamp under his belt, Sanchez will once again host a passing camp in his hometown of Mission Viejo, C.A., which he calls the “Jets West Camp.”
The confirmed list of attendees include: third string quarterback Greg McElroy, running backs Shonn Greene, Joe McKnight and John Conner; wide receivers Santonio Holmes, Jeremy Kerley, Patrick Turner and Scotty McKnight; along with tight ends Dustin Keller, Jeff Cumberland and Josh Baker.
The camp will focus on New York’s offensive skill players developing a rhythm and continuity with Sanchez in the new system engineered by recently hired offensive coordinator Tony Sparano. Gang Green is gun-ho to unleash its offensive firepower and provide a spark to an offense that sputtered down the stretch last season.
That spark, in the minds of many, will be ignited by Tebow’s offensive versatility. Sanchez’s annual trip to the west coast serves to help the team escape from the media circus back in the New York Metro area. Now with Tebow entering the fold, the Jets may have to deal with added distractions even though they’re nearly 2,800 miles from home.
Sanchez and Tebow quelled any notion of a rift between the two during minicamp and this journey west only confirms that they are not in direct competition for the starting quarterback role.
At least not yet.
