As Tim Tebow nabs the headlines and the NFL draft dominates the attention of the Jets front office, the most important issue for Gang Green entering 2012 is the contract status of their best player. Is a holdout inevitable for New York's pro bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis?

Is there a price tag for the best cornerback on the planet?

You better believe it.

It seems like just yesterday the New York Jets front office and All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis were in a contract dispute as they attempted to iron out the details of a possible long-term extension. Revis’ first holdout, which was chronicled on HBO’s Hard Knocks, saw the team’s top defensive back miss training camp and Gang Green’s four preseason contests.

The two sides finally came to an agreement on September 5, 2010, just one week prior to New York’s regular season home opener against the Baltimore Ravens. The newly formed four-year, $46 million contract ($32 million guaranteed) was deemed a 'Band-Aid deal’ that could be renegotiated by Revis’ agent down the line.

Alas, the midpoint of Revis’ four-year contract is upon us and there’s growing speculation that No. 24 will stage another holdout this time during the Jets upcoming training camp. As if Gang Green didn’t have enough issues on their plate—managing a potential quarterback controversy between incumbent Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow along with rebuilding a fractured locker room—now they have the gloomy prospect of their best player missing from offseason practices and workouts.

The 35-day holdout saga back in 2010 took its toll on the team and on Revis, who missed two regular games with a strained hamstring likely due to his absence from training camp and lack of preseason game action. The Jets and Revis have been through this song and dance number before, let’s hope this time it ends on a high note.
